What Is Invisalign in Marbella and How Does It Work?
Invisalign uses a series of custom-made clear plastic aligners to gradually reposition your teeth over time. Each aligner applies gentle, precisely calibrated forces to specific teeth, moving them fraction by fraction into their ideal position. At R&H Dental Marbella, our orthodontists use the iTero 3D scanner to create a digital map of your teeth, which feeds into Invisalign's ClinCheck software to produce your personalised treatment plan — including a 3D simulation of how your teeth will move at each stage.
The aligners are made from SmartTrack material — a proprietary thermoplastic developed specifically for Invisalign that applies a constant, gentle force and fits more comfortably than earlier generations. Each set is worn for 1–2 weeks before progressing to the next. The aligners are virtually invisible, removable for eating and brushing, and require no wires, brackets, or adjustments.
Invisalign vs Traditional Braces in Marbella
Both Invisalign and traditional braces achieve excellent orthodontic results. The choice depends on your case complexity, lifestyle, and personal preferences. Invisalign offers a discreet, removable option with fewer appointments and no dietary restrictions. Traditional braces may be recommended for more complex movements that benefit from fixed mechanics.

The majority of our Invisalign patients are adults who want straighter teeth without the visibility of traditional braces. Treatment can begin at any age, and we regularly treat patients well into their 50s, 60s, and beyond.

Invisalign Consultation & iTero Scan
A comprehensive assessment with digital iTero scanning — no messy impressions — and a preview of your potential smile outcome
Digital iTero scanning
Gone are the days of uncomfortable putty impressions. We use the iTero Element scanner to create a precise 3D digital model of your teeth in minutes. This scanner captures thousands of data points as it glides over your teeth, building a detailed digital replica. The scan is comfortable, fast, and far more accurate than traditional impressions — which means better-fitting aligners and more predictable results.
Instant smile preview
Using the iTero Outcome Simulator, we can show you a preview of how your teeth could look after Invisalign treatment — right there at the consultation, in under a minute. This gives you an immediate visual reference for what's achievable, helping you make an informed decision. While the final ClinCheck plan will be more precise, the Outcome Simulator provides an excellent first impression of your potential transformation.
ClinCheck Treatment Plan
Your orthodontist creates a precise, 3D ClinCheck treatment plan — a step-by-step animation of exactly how your teeth will move
The ClinCheck plan
ClinCheck is the software that sets Invisalign apart from other aligner systems. Your orthodontist uses your 3D scan to design a detailed treatment plan, specifying exactly how each tooth should move, in what sequence, and by how much. The result is a 3D animation that shows your teeth moving from their current position to the final, ideal alignment — stage by stage. You can see the before and after, and every step in between.
Refinement and approval
The ClinCheck plan is reviewed and refined by your orthodontist before being approved. This is where specialist expertise makes the difference — an experienced orthodontist will adjust tooth movements, staging, and attachments to optimise efficiency, reduce treatment time, and ensure the best possible outcome. You'll review and approve the plan before your custom aligners are manufactured.
Wearing Your Aligners
You'll receive a series of custom-made clear aligners, each one gently moving your teeth closer to the planned result
How to wear your aligners
Each set of custom aligners is worn for 1–2 weeks (depending on your specific plan) before moving to the next set. Aligners should be worn 20–22 hours per day — essentially all the time except when eating, drinking (anything other than water), and brushing your teeth. Each new aligner is slightly different from the last, applying precisely calibrated forces to move specific teeth in the planned sequence.
Attachments and refinements
For many cases, small tooth-coloured 'attachments' (bumps) are bonded to certain teeth to help the aligners grip and apply force more effectively. These are barely noticeable and are removed at the end of treatment. If progress tracking shows that any teeth aren't moving exactly as planned, we can order refinement aligners — additional sets to fine-tune the result at no extra cost (included in comprehensive Invisalign packages).
Living with Invisalign
One of the greatest advantages of Invisalign is lifestyle flexibility. The aligners are virtually invisible — most people won't notice you're wearing them. You can remove them for meals, special occasions, and sports. You can brush and floss normally. There are no dietary restrictions. Most patients adjust to wearing aligners within 1–2 days and find them far more comfortable than expected.
Retention & Your New Smile
Once treatment is complete, retainers maintain your beautifully aligned teeth for life
Retainers — protecting your investment
After your final aligner, retention is essential to maintain the result. Without retainers, teeth naturally tend to shift back. We provide both a fixed retainer (a thin wire bonded behind your front teeth — invisible and permanent) and a set of Vivera retainers (custom clear retainers made by Invisalign, tougher than regular aligners). We recommend wearing the removable retainer every night for the first year, then several nights per week long-term.
Cosmetic finishing
Many patients choose to enhance their results with teeth whitening, composite bonding, or other cosmetic treatments after Invisalign. Straight teeth provide the perfect foundation for cosmetic work — and the combination of aligned, whitened, or bonded teeth can deliver a truly transformative result. We can plan these treatments from the outset.

Invisalign FAQ
Everything you need to know about clear aligner treatment
Invisalign uses a series of custom-made clear plastic aligners to gradually move your teeth into the desired position. Each aligner is slightly different, applying precise forces to specific teeth. You wear each set for 1–2 weeks before switching to the next. At R&H Dental Marbella, our orthodontists provide Invisalign treatment that is virtually invisible, removable for eating and brushing, and far more comfortable than traditional braces.
Treatment duration depends on complexity. Mild cases (minor crowding or spacing): 4–6 months. Moderate cases: 9–15 months. Complex cases: 15–24 months. The average treatment time is 12–18 months. Your orthodontist at R&H Dental will provide a precise timeline based on your ClinCheck plan tailored to your specific needs.
For most cases, yes. Invisalign technology has advanced enormously and can now treat the vast majority of orthodontic issues, including moderate to severe crowding, spacing, overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites. At R&H Dental Marbella, our experienced orthodontists will assess your case honestly and advise if braces would be a better option for your specific situation.
In most situations, no. The aligners are made from a clear, virtually invisible material (SmartTrack). Most people won't notice you're wearing them unless they look very closely. Small tooth-coloured attachments may be visible on some teeth, but these are also very discreet and barely noticeable in daily interaction.
You must remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything other than water. This means there are no dietary restrictions — you can eat whatever you want. After eating, brush your teeth (or at least rinse your mouth) before reinserting the aligners. Drinking hot beverages with aligners in can distort them, and coloured drinks can stain them.
For optimal results, aligners should be worn 20–22 hours per day. This means they're only removed for eating, drinking (anything other than water), and brushing/flossing. Compliance is the single biggest factor affecting treatment success and duration — wearing aligners less than 20 hours per day can significantly slow progress.
Most patients experience mild pressure and some tightness when starting a new set of aligners, particularly during the first 1–2 days. This is normal and indicates the aligners are working. The discomfort is generally much less than with traditional braces. Over-the-counter pain relief is rarely needed, and most patients adapt very quickly.
Attachments are small, tooth-coloured bumps made of composite resin that are bonded to certain teeth during Invisalign treatment. They act as 'handles' that help the aligners grip the teeth and apply force more precisely for specific movements (rotations, extrusions, etc.). They're barely visible and are removed at the end of treatment.
Yes — we are the only dental clinic in Marbella with a publicly available written guarantee. All treatments, including Invisalign, come backed by this guarantee. The main condition is maintaining regular check ups and cleanings every 6 months and following the prescribed retention protocol.
