Gum health assessment

Before beginning the clean, your hygienist performs a detailed assessment of your gum health. This includes measuring the depth of the gum pockets around each tooth using a periodontal probe. Healthy pockets measure 1–3mm; deeper pockets may indicate gum disease that requires a more intensive cleaning approach. We also check for bleeding, recession, and inflammation — all early warning signs that your gums need extra care.

Staining and build-up evaluation

We assess the level of plaque (soft bacterial film) and calculus (hardened tartar) on your teeth. Even patients with excellent brushing habits can accumulate tartar in hard-to-reach areas — particularly behind the lower front teeth and around the upper back molars. We'll also note any staining from coffee, tea, red wine, or smoking so we can target these areas during the polish.

How ultrasonic scaling works

Our hygienists use state-of-the-art ultrasonic scalers that vibrate at high frequency to break apart tartar deposits. A fine water spray simultaneously flushes away debris and keeps the area cool. This technology is far more comfortable than traditional hand-only scaling and is extremely effective at removing even stubborn calculus. For patients with sensitivity, we can adjust the power settings or apply a topical numbing gel.

Subgingival cleaning

For patients with early gum disease or deeper pockets, we also clean beneath the gum line — an area where bacteria and tartar can hide and cause ongoing damage. This subgingival cleaning is essential for halting the progression of gum disease and allowing the gums to heal and reattach to the teeth.

Precision hand scaling

After the ultrasonic phase, your hygienist uses fine hand instruments (curettes and scalers) to remove any remaining deposits and smooth the tooth surfaces. This step is particularly important for areas that are difficult to access with ultrasonic instruments, such as between tightly spaced teeth and deep within gum pockets. Smooth root surfaces discourage future tartar accumulation and make daily cleaning more effective.

Professional polishing

We use a prophy paste in various grits to polish all tooth surfaces, removing surface stains and leaving your teeth feeling smooth and clean. For heavier staining (coffee, tea, smoking), we may use an airflow polishing system — a gentle jet of fine powder and water that removes stains quickly and comfortably without abrading the enamel.
