Dental Hygienist in Marbella

Expert preventive care and gum health management by English-speaking professionals

Our dental hygienists at R&H Dental Marbella are the frontline of preventive care. With thorough professional cleanings, gum health assessments, and personalised oral hygiene advice, they help you keep your natural teeth healthy for life. All appointments are conducted in English.

What Does a Dental Hygienist Do?

A dental hygienist is a specialist in preventive oral care. At R&H Dental Marbella, our hygienists perform professional cleanings (scaling and polishing), assess gum health, take diagnostic X-rays, apply fluoride treatments, and provide personalised advice on brushing, flossing, and diet. They play a crucial role in preventing gum disease — the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

Our hygienists work closely with your dentist to create a personalised preventive care plan. If early signs of gum disease are detected, they can provide deep cleaning (root planing) to remove bacteria from below the gum line and stabilise the condition before it progresses. Regular hygienist visits are the single most effective way to maintain healthy teeth and gums long-term.

How Often Should You See the Hygienist?

We recommend seeing the hygienist every 6 months for most patients. This regular schedule prevents tartar build-up, catches early gum problems, and keeps your teeth looking their best. Patients with a history of gum disease, heavy tartar build-up, or dental implants may benefit from more frequent visits — typically every 3–4 months.

  • Every 6 months: standard recommendation for healthy gums

  • Every 3–4 months: for patients with gum disease or implants

  • Regular hygienist visits are a condition of the R&H Dental written guarantee

  • Appointments typically last 30–45 minutes

The Link Between Oral Health and General Health in Marbella

Research increasingly shows that oral health is closely connected to overall health. Gum disease has been linked to heart disease, diabetes complications, respiratory infections, and even Alzheimer's disease. By keeping your gums healthy through regular hygienist visits, you're not just protecting your teeth — you're investing in your overall wellbeing. At R&H Dental, preventive care is the foundation of everything we do.

Your Hygienist Appointment

A comprehensive, gentle approach to preventive oral care.

1

Periodontal Assessment

root-canal-treatment-marbella

A comprehensive evaluation of your gum health, including pocket depth measurements, bleeding points, and recession mapping

Full periodontal charting

Our hygienist performs a full-mouth periodontal assessment, measuring the depth of the gum pocket at six points around every tooth. These measurements (recorded in millimetres) provide a precise map of your gum health. Healthy gums typically measure 1–3mm with no bleeding; deeper pockets or bleeding on probing indicate active gum disease that needs targeted treatment. We track these measurements over time to monitor improvement or identify any areas that need attention.

Risk assessment

Beyond pocket depths, we assess additional risk factors that influence gum health: smoking status, diabetes control, medication use, family history of gum disease, and stress levels. This holistic approach allows us to create a truly personalised prevention plan rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

2

Professional Cleaning & Debridement

dental-hygiene-cleaning-marbella

Thorough removal of plaque, calculus and bacterial biofilm using advanced ultrasonic and hand instruments

Comprehensive biofilm management

Our hygienists use a combination of ultrasonic scaling, hand instrumentation, and airflow polishing to thoroughly remove all deposits from your teeth and beneath your gums. The approach is tailored to your specific needs — a patient with mild gingivitis receives a different level of care than a patient managing chronic periodontitis.

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)

We follow the principles of Guided Biofilm Therapy, a systematic, evidence-based protocol for professional dental hygiene. This approach uses a disclosing agent to make bacterial biofilm visible, followed by airflow technology to remove it efficiently and comfortably. The result is a more thorough, more comfortable clean that targets the invisible bacteria that cause disease.

3

Stain Removal & Polishing

Advanced airflow and polishing systems remove surface staining and leave teeth smooth and bright

Airflow polishing

For patients with surface staining from coffee, tea, red wine, or smoking, we use the EMS Airflow system — a gentle jet of fine erythritol powder and warm water that lifts stains away without touching the tooth surface. This is far more comfortable than traditional polishing and won't damage enamel or existing dental work. The result is a noticeably brighter smile with a smooth, clean feel.

Fluoride application

After cleaning, we may apply a professional-strength fluoride varnish to strengthen your enamel and reduce sensitivity. This fluoride is significantly more concentrated than what's found in toothpaste and provides lasting protection against decay. It's particularly beneficial for patients with sensitive teeth, exposed root surfaces, or a history of cavities.

4

Personalised Home Care Plan

Expert coaching on the techniques and tools that will keep your teeth and gums healthy between visits

Tailored oral hygiene instruction

Every patient's mouth is different, which is why generic brushing advice isn't enough. Our hygienist will demonstrate the specific techniques and tools that will be most effective for your individual situation — whether that's a modified Bass technique for gum disease management, interdental brushes for bridgework, or a water flosser for implant care.

Product recommendations

We'll recommend the best products for your needs: electric vs. manual toothbrush, the right size interdental brushes, specific toothpastes for sensitivity or enamel strengthening, and mouthwashes when appropriate. We stock professional-grade products in the clinic if you'd like to purchase them, but we never pressure you — generic alternatives are fine too.

Dental Hygienist FAQ

Common questions about hygienist services and gum health

A dental hygienist specialises in preventive care — specifically, cleaning teeth and gums, treating and preventing gum disease, and educating patients about oral hygiene. Dentists focus more on diagnosing conditions, performing restorative work (fillings, crowns), and planning complex treatments. At R&H Dental, our hygienists and dentists work as an integrated team to deliver comprehensive care.

Most patients benefit from seeing a hygienist every 6 months, in line with their dental check up schedule. Patients with active gum disease, implants, or a history of rapid tartar build-up may be recommended to visit every 3–4 months until their condition is stabilised.

Yes. Our hygienists are experienced in managing all stages of gum disease. For mild to moderate cases (gingivitis and early periodontitis), non-surgical treatment by the hygienist — thorough cleaning, root surface debridement, and home care coaching — is often sufficient to bring the condition under control. For more advanced cases, we work with the dental team to provide a comprehensive treatment approach.

We prioritise comfort at every appointment. A routine hygiene visit should be comfortable, though you may feel some vibration and mild pressure. If you have sensitive teeth or inflamed gums, we can apply topical numbing gel or use local anaesthesia. Our hygienists are experienced with nervous patients and will always work at your pace.

Absolutely. Sensitivity is often caused by exposed root surfaces, enamel erosion, or gum recession. Our hygienist can apply professional desensitising treatments, recommend specific products for home use, and advise on techniques to reduce sensitivity. Professional fluoride applications can also provide lasting relief.

Yes. Even with excellent home care, plaque can accumulate in hard-to-reach areas and harden into tartar (calculus), which can only be removed professionally. Regular hygiene appointments catch these build-ups early and help maintain the long-term health of your teeth and gums.

Yes — in fact, professional cleaning is essential for implant maintenance. We use specialised instruments designed specifically for implant surfaces, avoiding any materials that could scratch or damage the implant components. Regular hygiene visits are key to preventing peri-implantitis (inflammation around implants).

Yes — we are the only dental clinic in Marbella with a publicly available written guarantee. All treatments come backed by this guarantee, provided you maintain regular check ups and cleanings at R&H Dental every 6 months.
