CEREC in Marbella
Same-day ceramic restorations that last up to 3x longer than fillings — completed in one visit with no temporaries and no second injection
When a tooth is too damaged for a normal filling but does not need a full crown, a CEREC inlay is often the ideal middle ground. We scan, design, mill, and bond the restoration in one appointment, with no temporaries and no need to come back.
Benefit of CEREC Inlays & Onlays in Marbella
CEREC is a highly efficient way to restore damaged teeth with more strength and precision than a conventional filling.
What Are CEREC Inlays and Onlays?
CEREC inlays and onlays are custom-made ceramic restorations designed to repair teeth that are too damaged for a filling but don't yet need a full crown. Unlike traditional fillings that are packed into the tooth, CEREC restorations are milled from a solid block of dental ceramic using CAD/CAM technology — right here in our clinic. They bond to the tooth with exceptional precision, strengthening the remaining structure rather than just plugging the gap.
The key difference between an inlay and an onlay is coverage: an inlay fits within the cusps (tips) of the tooth, while an onlay extends over one or more cusps. Both are made from the same premium ceramic material and are completed in a single visit at R&H Dental Marbella.
Why Choose CEREC Over Traditional Fillings?
Standard composite fillings are an excellent option for small cavities, but larger fillings can shrink, crack, and fail over time. CEREC ceramic restorations are significantly harder and more durable, with studies showing they last up to three times longer than composite fillings. They also maintain their colour permanently and are completely biocompatible.

Same-Day CEREC Ceramic Inlays in Marbella
At R&H Dental, we invested in CEREC technology to give our patients the convenience of same-day ceramic restorations. Your tooth is scanned digitally (no messy impressions), the restoration is designed on screen, milled from a block of premium ceramic in our in-house milling unit, and bonded to your tooth — all in a single appointment. You leave with the finished restoration, no temporaries, and no need to return.
How CEREC Works
From digital scan to precision-milled ceramic — all in a single appointment
The Problem with Traditional Fillings
Hand-made white plastic fillings shrink up to 5% as they harden, pulling away from cavity walls and causing sensitivity and staining over time
Why fillings fail
Traditional composite (white plastic) fillings are built up in layers and set with a blue curing light, which makes them go from a soft putty texture to a hard plastic. However, as they harden, they also shrink up to 5% of their volume. This shrinkage pulls the filling away from the cavity walls, creating micro-gaps where bacteria can enter. It also places the filling under internal stress, reducing its longevity and increasing the chances of sensitivity, staining, and eventual failure.
The cycle of replacement
Because traditional fillings degrade over time, they need to be replaced periodically — and each replacement removes a little more healthy tooth structure. This cycle of drilling and refilling can eventually weaken the tooth to the point where it needs a crown or even a root canal. CEREC inlays break this cycle by lasting significantly longer than conventional fillings.
The CEREC Solution
CEREC inlays are machine-cut from a solid block of ceramic and cemented into the tooth, eliminating shrinkage and lasting up to 3x longer
What is CEREC?
CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) is an advanced CAD/CAM technology that allows us to design and mill custom ceramic restorations right here in our clinic — all in a single appointment. Instead of building up a filling by hand in layers, a CEREC inlay is precision-cut from a single solid block of high-grade ceramic using computer-guided milling. This eliminates the shrinkage problem entirely.
How it works
After removing the decay, we take a highly accurate 3D digital scan of your tooth (no messy impressions). Our software designs the perfect restoration based on your tooth's anatomy. The design is sent to our in-clinic milling unit, which carves the inlay from a solid ceramic block in about 15 minutes. The finished inlay is then bonded into place with a strong adhesive cement. The entire process is completed in a single visit — no temporary fillings, no second appointment, no second injection.
Key Advantages of CEREC Inlays
Superior longevity, strength, biocompatibility, and aesthetics compared to traditional composite fillings
Strength & durability
CEREC ceramic can withstand forces of up to 500 megapascals, making it significantly stronger than composite resin. With 95% proven long-term stability, CEREC inlays last up to 3 times longer than traditional fillings. This dramatically reduces your future need for root canals and crowns by preserving more tooth structure over your lifetime.
Biocompatibility & comfort
Ceramics are biocompatible and expand and contract with temperature changes at a rate similar to natural tooth enamel. This means little to no sensitivity to hot and cold — a common complaint with traditional fillings. There is no danger of mercury or other metals, and you'll never see unsightly black lines around your teeth.
Perfect aesthetics
With 17 tooth shades to choose from and the translucent quality of ceramic that allows light to pass through naturally, CEREC inlays are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth. The computer-generated designs ensure perfect anatomical contours and contact points with neighbouring teeth.
Your CEREC Appointment
Everything is completed in a single 90-minute visit — no temporary fillings, no second injections, no waiting for a lab
One visit, complete restoration
Your CEREC appointment typically takes around 90 minutes. This includes numbing the tooth, removing the decay, taking the digital scan, designing and milling the restoration, and bonding it into place. You walk out with a permanent, precision-fitted ceramic restoration — no need to return for a second appointment as you would with a traditional lab-made inlay.
Aftercare
CEREC inlays require no special care beyond normal good oral hygiene — brushing twice daily, flossing, and regular check ups. The smooth ceramic surface resists staining and plaque accumulation better than composite fillings, making them easier to keep clean. You can eat and drink normally immediately after the appointment.

CEREC inlays in Marbella: your questions answered
01Understanding partial ceramic restorations
What is a CEREC inlay?
A CEREC inlay is a custom ceramic restoration designed digitally and milled outside the tooth before bonding. R&H uses this approach for suitable damaged teeth when a partial restoration can meet their needs without automatically requiring a full crown.
What is the difference between an inlay and an onlay?
An inlay fits within the cusps of a tooth. An onlay extends over one or more cusps to provide additional coverage. The design should reflect which parts need protection, rather than choosing the smallest-sounding treatment name.
What does overlay mean?
An overlay describes more extensive coverage of the biting surface within a partial-restoration approach. Ask the dentist to show which cusps will be covered and why, because the useful distinction is the protection planned for your actual tooth.
How is a ceramic inlay different from a white filling?
Composite is placed and hardened directly inside the cavity. A ceramic inlay is made separately and then bonded into the prepared tooth. Both need careful technique; their different fabrication methods do not make one universally suitable for every defect.
How is an onlay different from a full crown?
An onlay replaces and covers selected damaged or weakened areas. A full crown surrounds the visible part of the tooth more extensively. The choice depends on remaining structure and protection needs, not simply on whether digital equipment is available.
What does CAD/CAM mean for a ceramic tooth restoration?
It means computer-assisted design and manufacture. At R&H, a scan supports digital design and milling of the ceramic piece. The dentist still checks fit, contacts and bite in your mouth; software assists clinical work rather than replacing judgement.
Is CEREC the name of the ceramic material?
CEREC refers to the digital restoration system, not one single ceramic composition. The material and design are selected for the tooth. Ask which ceramic is proposed if you want to compare its properties, limitations and alternatives.
Will I still have my natural tooth underneath?
Yes. An inlay or onlay restores a tooth that remains in place, replacing selected missing or weakened areas. It is different from an implant replacing a missing tooth. The condition of the remaining tooth continues to influence the result.
Is an inlay removable for cleaning?
No. It is bonded as a fixed restoration and is not taken out at home. You clean the tooth and its surrounding spaces normally, with advice adapted to your mouth, while the dentist checks the restoration during follow-up.
Is a ceramic inlay mainly a cosmetic treatment?
Its main role is restoring a damaged tooth's structure and function, with a tooth-coloured appearance. If the tooth is healthy and your concern is only its visible shape or colour, a different cosmetic assessment may be more appropriate.
02Is CEREC suitable for my tooth?
When might R&H recommend a CEREC ceramic inlay?
It may be considered for a medium or large defect, a failing restoration or a weakened tooth that can benefit from partial coverage. Examination determines whether enough suitable structure remains and whether composite or a crown offers a better alternative.
Does every large filling need conversion to ceramic?
No. Size is only one factor. The dentist considers remaining walls, cracks, bite, access and the condition of the current restoration. A sound filling may remain suitable; repair, replacement or monitoring should each have a clear clinical reason.
Is there a fixed percentage of missing tooth that requires an inlay?
No universal percentage determines the correct restoration. The location of missing structure and whether cusps need protection can matter as much as the amount. Ask how the proposed design addresses your tooth's particular weaknesses.
Can an onlay help protect a cracked tooth?
Cusp coverage can be appropriate for selected cracked teeth, after assessing crack extent, symptoms and pulp condition. It cannot make every crack repairable or guarantee that one will never progress. The prognosis needs discussion before committing to restoration.
Can ceramic restore a tooth with very deep decay?
Possibly, but pulp health and restorability must be assessed first. A well-designed ceramic piece cannot resolve every underlying pulp problem. The dentist may need to address deeper disease or reconsider the restoration once the true defect is clear.
Does an inlay remove the need for root canal treatment?
No. Root canal treatment addresses disease inside the tooth, while an inlay restores missing structure. Treating damage appropriately may help protect a tooth, but choosing ceramic cannot guarantee that its pulp will never require treatment.
Can a root-canal-treated tooth have an onlay?
A partial restoration may be considered when the remaining tooth and bite permit suitable protection. Root canal treatment does not automatically prescribe one restoration design. The dentist should explain whether an onlay, crown or other option suits that tooth.
How does grinding affect ceramic restoration planning?
Heavy biting forces influence design, thickness, remaining support and maintenance. Ceramic is not unbreakable simply because it is hard. Tell the dentist about grinding or clenching so the restoration and any protective measures can be planned individually.
Can I request ceramic just because I prefer the material?
You can explain that preference, but suitability comes first. Ceramic may require a different preparation and bonding approach from composite. Ask the dentist to compare the benefits and tradeoffs for your tooth before deciding solely on material preference.
What could make a full crown more appropriate than an onlay?
The pattern of damage, weak walls, cracks or limited remaining structure may require more extensive coverage. The dentist assesses how a restoration can be supported and retained, then explains why partial coverage would or would not be reliable.
03Scanning, design and fitting
What happens during a CEREC appointment at R&H in Marbella?
For a suitable CEREC inlay at R&H in Marbella, the appointment includes preparation, a digital scan, computer-assisted design, milling and bonding. Fit and bite are checked before completion. The exact sequence and timing depend on the tooth and any additional care needed.
Will the tooth be numbed before preparation for a ceramic inlay?
Local anaesthesia can be used to manage preparation and fitting comfortably. Requirements vary with the tooth and procedure. Tell us about anxiety or previous difficulties, and signal any pain so the dentist can pause and reassess comfort measures.
How much natural tooth is removed?
Preparation is tailored to damaged tissue and the space needed for a suitable ceramic design. Partial restoration can conserve structure compared with broader coverage in appropriate cases, but it still requires preparation and is not a no-drilling treatment.
Does digital scanning replace a conventional impression?
The CEREC workflow described by R&H uses an intraoral digital scan for designing the restoration. This can avoid a conventional impression for that workflow, although your wider treatment plan may still require other records or procedures.
Is the digital scan an X-ray?
No. The surface scan used to design the restoration is a different record from dental X-rays. Imaging of roots or hidden disease, when indicated, serves a separate diagnostic purpose; one does not replace the other.
Who checks the computer-designed shape?
The dentist reviews the design and checks the finished restoration clinically. Digital planning helps reproduce contours, but the contacts, margins and bite still need assessment in your mouth. A computer-generated design is not automatically a perfect fit.
What happens when a CEREC ceramic restoration is milled?
The planned restoration is cut from a ceramic block using the milling system. This creates the restoration body outside your mouth. Material-specific finishing and clinical checks still need time, so the milling stage is only part of the appointment.
How is the ceramic attached to the tooth?
After checking the fit, the dentist uses a material-specific bonding and cementation protocol. Isolation and preparation of the tooth and ceramic surfaces matter. The ceramic body is already made, but the adhesive stage remains important to the final seal.
Why are the contacts with neighbouring teeth checked?
Contacts affect how food passes between teeth and how the restoration fits your dental arch. The dentist checks them alongside the margins and bite. Report persistent food trapping after fitting rather than assuming it is unavoidable with ceramic.
Can the bite be adjusted after fitting?
The dentist checks and adjusts the bite as needed during fitting. If a contact feels wrong after numbness resolves, arrange a review. A digital design does not remove the need to reassess how the restoration functions in daily use.
04Same-day treatment and comfort
Are same-day CEREC inlays and onlays possible in Marbella?
Yes, suitable cases can be scanned, designed, milled and fitted in one appointment at R&H. This depends on clinical needs and planning. Confirm the schedule for your tooth before assuming that every case can be completed the same day.
How long should I allow for my CEREC inlay appointment?
R&H's guidance is around 90 minutes, with the verified knowledge base describing 90 minutes as a minimum. Complexity and additional work can extend this. Ask for your planned appointment length rather than arranging travel around an exact universal duration.
Will I need a temporary while having a ceramic inlay made?
A completed same-day case can avoid a temporary between appointments. However, additional treatment, clinical findings or scheduling may make a provisional necessary. Ask whether your plan is definitely suitable for same-day fitting and what happens if that changes.
Does same-day treatment mean no follow-up is needed?
No. Completing fabrication and fitting in one visit does not remove the need for maintenance or review if symptoms arise. The tooth and restoration still need monitoring, even when there is no separate laboratory fitting appointment.
Will I only need one anaesthetic injection?
The number of injections depends on your tooth, response and treatment. Same-day care can avoid a separate numbing appointment, but it cannot guarantee one injection. Tell the dentist if you need more time or feel discomfort during preparation.
Can unexpected findings change a same-day plan?
Yes. Preparation may reveal deeper decay, a crack or insufficient support that changes the appropriate treatment. The dentist should explain the finding and options. Speed is a convenience, but the final restoration must still suit the clinical situation.
Can more than one inlay be made during a visit?
Discuss the number of teeth and available time with the clinic. Preparation, design, milling and fitting are needed for each restoration, so multiple teeth can change the duration or number of visits. Individual planning comes before a same-day promise.
Can I have CEREC while visiting Marbella briefly?
Ask for assessment and scheduling before relying on a short stay. Same-day fabrication can be convenient, but additional treatment or review may be needed. Explain your departure date so the team can consider a realistic plan and continuity of care.
Is sensitivity impossible because the restoration is ceramic?
No. Sensitivity may improve when damage is treated, but can also occur after preparation or bonding. Ceramic does not guarantee a symptom-free tooth. Persistent, severe or worsening symptoms need review of the pulp, bite and restoration.
What if I am nervous about a longer appointment?
Tell the team beforehand so the sequence can be explained and pauses agreed. A CEREC visit includes several stages, and knowing what each involves can help. Any additional comfort measures should be discussed and arranged individually.
05Durability, appearance and aftercare
How long can a ceramic inlay last?
It can function for years, but longevity varies with ceramic type, design, bonding, remaining tooth and maintenance. There is no guaranteed lifespan for every restoration. The dentist assesses its condition over time instead of replacing it at a fixed age.
Does CEREC always last three times longer than composite?
No. Such a comparison cannot be applied universally to individual teeth. Ceramic and composite performance depends on the case and technique. Ask how the proposed option addresses your defect rather than relying on a fixed multiplier for durability.
Is ceramic too strong to fracture?
No. Ceramic can fracture despite favourable material properties. Thickness, design, support and biting forces influence its performance. Laboratory strength figures cannot predict your restoration's lifespan alone, which is why suitable preparation and maintenance remain important.
Does ceramic avoid all shrinkage-related problems?
The ceramic body is fabricated before fitting rather than hardened as a mass inside the cavity. However, the adhesive cement and clinical technique still matter. This difference does not guarantee freedom from leakage, sensitivity or restoration failure.
Will the ceramic colour look natural?
Shade, translucency and contour are selected to blend with the tooth. The available ceramic and underlying tooth affect the result. Digital design assists shaping, but colour matching and aesthetic limitations still need discussion with the dentist.
Can ceramic stain or discolour over time?
Ceramic can offer good colour stability, but the tooth, margins and surface deposits still need attention. Avoid assuming it can never change appearance. Regular review distinguishes superficial staining from a concern involving the surrounding tooth or bonding margins.
When can I eat after fitting?
Follow the instructions for the actual restoration and bonding procedure. Wait until anaesthetic numbness has resolved before eating to avoid injuring soft tissues. If the bite feels uncomfortable, contact the clinic rather than testing it with hard foods.
How do I care for an inlay at home?
Maintain brushing with fluoride toothpaste and appropriate interdental cleaning, and attend the agreed reviews. Ceramic still sits on a natural tooth that needs care. Ask for technique advice if a particular contact or gum margin is difficult to clean.
What should I do if an inlay chips or feels loose?
Contact the clinic for assessment. The response depends on the ceramic, extent of damage and condition of the underlying tooth. A loose or chipped restoration should not simply be ignored because it is relatively new or covered by a policy.
Can decay return around a ceramic inlay?
Yes. The remaining tooth and margins still require plaque control and review. Ceramic restores lost structure but does not make the surrounding tooth immune to disease. Report food trapping, new sensitivity or a visible change at the edge.
06Prices and making a decision
What is the starting price for CEREC inlays in Marbella at R&H?
R&H lists CEREC inlays from 445€. The published guide spans 445€–695€ depending on the restored surfaces, with higher fees possible for complex cases. An examination is needed to establish the design and quotation for your tooth.
Why does the number of restored surfaces affect the price?
More involved surfaces can change preparation, design and fitting requirements. R&H also considers access, depth and complexity. The number provides one part of the quotation, but it does not alone describe how demanding a particular restoration will be.
Is the ceramic price a complete quote for all treatment on the tooth?
Not necessarily. An assessment may identify separate needs such as treatment of deeper disease or another restoration stage. Ask for an itemised plan stating what is included, any additional work and circumstances that could change the proposed cost.
Is a CEREC consultation automatically free?
R&H offers a free first dental check-up, but that does not make every consultation or procedure free. Confirm the appointment type and any investigation fees with reception. The restoration itself has a separate treatment quotation.
Does R&H provide a written guarantee for inlays?
The published policy places ceramic inlays, onlays and overlays in a three-year category, subject to conditions and exclusions. Ask for the current written terms before treatment. This commercial coverage is different from predicting how long your tooth will last.
What maintenance may the guarantee require?
R&H's published guidance links cover to regular check-ups, cleanings and following maintenance conditions. Confirm the actual schedule and exclusions in writing. Do not assume that every later dental problem is covered just because ceramic was used.
How should I compare ceramic with a less expensive filling?
Compare suitability, remaining tooth, expected maintenance and the consequences of each preparation, alongside cost. Ask why the dentist favours one for this defect. Neither the lowest price nor the most advanced equipment determines the right answer alone.
What should I clarify before agreeing to a same-day ceramic restoration?
Confirm the tooth and design, material, total quote, likely duration and whether additional visits could be needed. Also discuss anaesthesia and aftercare. A same-day plan should be specific to your assessment rather than a blanket promise attached to the technology.
Can I request a second opinion before replacing a large filling?
Yes. Bring the existing proposal and available relevant images, and ask about the reason for replacement and alternative designs. Confirm consultation fees with reception. A second opinion can help clarify whether the tooth needs repair, partial coverage or something else.
How do I request a CEREC assessment in Marbella?
Tell R&H which tooth concerns you and whether the issue is a large filling, fracture or prior recommendation. Reception confirms the appointment request. Clinical assessment establishes suitability before the restoration design, timing and final price are agreed.
